Early Life

Lee Ru-ma, known by his stage name Yiruma, was born in Seoul, South Korea. He began his musical journey at the tender age of five when he started learning the piano. His passion for music led him to move to the United Kingdom, where he attended the prestigious Purcell School for Young Musicians. Yiruma later graduated from King's College London, solidifying his foundation in music.

Career

After returning to South Korea, Yiruma released his debut album, "Love Scene," in 2001, marking the beginning of his professional career. His breakthrough came with the track "When Love Falls," which was featured in the popular drama "Winter Sonata," significantly boosting his popularity. In April 2002, he held his first solo concert, further establishing his presence in the music scene. Yiruma gained acclaim for composing soundtracks for various projects, including the animation "Doggy Poo" and the drama "Spring Waltz." After completing his military service in 2008, he embarked on a nationwide tour and became a DJ for KBS 1FM, hosting "Yiruma's Music from All Around the World."

Yiruma's music saw a resurgence during the COVID-19 pandemic, with his compositions, particularly "River Flows in You," gaining millions of views on social media. His compilation album, "The Best: Reminiscent, 10th Anniversary," debuted at number three on the Billboard classical charts in July 2020, later reaching number one.

Personal Life

Yiruma previously held British citizenship, which he renounced to fulfill his mandatory military service in the Republic of Korea Navy. He married Son Hye-im, the sister of actress Son Tae-young, in April 2007, and they welcomed a daughter in 2008. Yiruma's personal and professional life reflects his dedication to music and family, making him a beloved figure in the South Korean music industry.
