Zack de la Rocha

Early Life

Zacharias Manuel de la Rocha, known as Zack de la Rocha, was born on January 12, 1970, in Long Beach, California. He is the son of Robert "Beto" de la Rocha, a Mexican-American muralist, and Olivia Lorryne Carter, who has German and Irish heritage. His family background is rich in cultural and political history, with his great-grandfather being a Mexican revolutionary. After his parents divorced when he was six, de la Rocha moved to Irvine with his mother, where he faced the challenges of growing up in a predominantly white community, which he later described as "one of the most racist cities imaginable."

Musical Career

Zack de la Rocha's musical journey began in his youth when he formed a band called Juvenile Expression with Tim Commerford. His passion for punk rock led him to join the straight edge band Hard Stance in 1987. By 1988, he became the lead vocalist of Inside Out, a band that released the influential EP "No Spiritual Surrender" in 1990. However, it was his role as the frontman of Rage Against the Machine that catapulted him to fame. The band, known for its fusion of rock and rap, became a voice for political activism, with de la Rocha's lyrics addressing issues of corporate greed and government oppression.

Activism

Beyond music, de la Rocha is a committed activist, advocating for various causes including the Zapatista movement in Mexico and the cases of Leonard Peltier and Mumia Abu-Jamal. He has spoken at the United Nations and organized benefit concerts to raise awareness about social injustices. His Chicano identity deeply influences his activism, as he strives to support the struggles of immigrants and people of color. De la Rocha's dedication to community engagement is evident in his establishment of the Centro de Regeneracion, a space for cultural expression and youth empowerment in Highland Park, Los Angeles.
