Early Life

Zakir Hussain Qureshi was born on March 9, 1951, in Bombay (now Mumbai), Maharashtra, into a family deeply rooted in music. His father, Alla Rakha Qureshi, was a celebrated tabla player, which set the stage for Zakir's illustrious career. He began his formal training in Hindustani classical music at the tender age of seven, dedicating his mornings to three hours of rigorous practice. By the age of seven, he was already performing in concerts, and by twelve, he was touring, showcasing his prodigious talent.

Career

Hussain's career spanned multiple genres, including Hindustani classical music, jazz, and world music. He gained international acclaim as one of the greatest tabla players of his generation, collaborating with renowned artists such as George Harrison and John McLaughlin. He was a founding member of the fusion group Shakti and played a pivotal role in popularizing Indian classical music globally. His work on the Grammy-winning album "Planet Drum" in 1991 marked a significant milestone, as it was the first Grammy awarded in the Best World Music Album category. Hussain's contributions to music extended beyond performance; he was also a composer and music producer, influencing countless musicians worldwide.

Personal Life

Zakir Hussain married Antonia Minnecola, a Kathak dancer and teacher, and they had two daughters, Anisa and Isabella. His family background was rich in musical talent, with both of his brothers also being accomplished percussionists. Hussain's personal life was marked by a deep commitment to music and family, and he continued to innovate in his field until his passing on December 15, 2024, in San Francisco, California, from complications related to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. His legacy as a master of the tabla and a bridge between Eastern and Western music remains influential.
