Early Life

Renée Marcelle "Zizi" Jeanmaire was born on April 29, 1924, in Paris, France. She was the daughter of Olga Renée and Marcel Jeanmaire. Her mother affectionately called her "mon Jésus," which later transformed into "mon Zizi." Zizi's passion for dance began early, and she met her future husband, the renowned dancer and choreographer Roland Petit, at the Paris Opera Ballet when they were both just nine years old.

Zizi Jeanmaire's career took off in the 1940s when she became a ballerina with the Nouveau Ballet de Monte Carlo in 1946. She gained fame for her energetic performances, particularly in the title role of the ballet "Carmen," which premiered in London in 1949.
