Zubeen Garg

Early Life

Zubeen Garg was born on November 18, 1972, in Tura, Meghalaya, into an Assamese Brahmin family. His parents, Mohini Mohon Borthakur and Ily Borthakur, influenced his artistic inclinations; his mother was a singer, while his father was a magistrate and a lyricist known by the pen name Kapil Thakur. Zubeen's early life was marked by frequent relocations due to his father's job, which shaped his diverse cultural exposure. He initially bore the last name "Borthakur" but later adopted "Garg," reflecting his Brahmin heritage. Tragically, his sister Jonkie, also a singer, passed away in a car accident in 2002, an event that deeply affected him and inspired his dedication to music.

Career

Zubeen's musical journey began in 1992 with the release of his Assamese solo album "Anamika," which marked the start of a prolific career. He quickly gained recognition for his unique blend of Assamese folk, rock, and pop music, releasing several successful albums such as "Xopunor Xur" and "Maya." In 1995, he moved to Mumbai to pursue opportunities in Bollywood, where he recorded numerous hit songs and albums, including "Chandni Raat" and "Yuhi Kabhi." His versatility allowed him to sing in over 40 languages and dialects, showcasing his ability to connect with diverse audiences. Zubeen's music often reflects themes of social dissent and cultural pride, and he is celebrated for his contributions to the revival of traditional Assamese music.
