Early Life

Claude Antoine Marie François, affectionately known as Cloclo, was born on February 1, 1939, in Ismaïlia, Egypt, to a French father and an Italian mother. His father, Aimé François, worked as a senior manager in the Suez Canal Company, which led the family to relocate to Port Tewfik in 1951. Following the Suez Crisis in 1956, they moved to Monaco, where financial struggles ensued after his father's illness. Despite these challenges, François developed a passion for music, taking piano and violin lessons from his mother and learning to play the drums on his own. He began performing in nightclubs along the French Riviera, which set the stage for his future career.

Career

François moved to Paris to pursue his music career, initially performing in a singing group. His breakthrough came in 1962 with the French adaptation of the Everly Brothers' song "Belles! Belles! Belles!". This success was followed by other hits, including "Si j'avais un marteau" and the iconic "Comme d'habitude", which later inspired the English classic "My Way". François was known for his dynamic performances and innovative dance steps, which captivated audiences. He headlined at the prestigious Paris Olympia in 1963, marking his arrival as a major star in the French pop music scene.

Personal Life

François's personal life was marked by tumultuous relationships, including a marriage to dancer Janet Woollacott in 1960, which ended in divorce in 1967. He had two sons with model Isabelle Forêt, whom he kept hidden from the public to maintain his image. Despite his fame, François faced personal challenges, including a near-death experience from an IRA bomb explosion in 1975 and a fan's assassination attempt in 1977. His philanthropic efforts included organizing concerts for handicapped children and medical research, showcasing his commitment to giving back to the community. Claude François's life was tragically cut short when he passed away on March 11, 1978, but his legacy in French pop music endures.
