Joaquín Rodrigo

Early Life

Joaquín Rodrigo Vidre, born on November 22, 1901, in Sagunto, Province of Valencia, was a Spanish composer and virtuoso pianist. Tragically, he lost his sight completely at the age of three due to diphtheria. Despite this challenge, he began his musical education at eight, studying solfège, piano, and violin. By sixteen, he was delving into harmony and composition, writing his works in Braille, which were later transcribed for publication.

Career

Rodrigo's formal music education included studies under Francisco Antich in Valencia and Paul Dukas in Paris. He later returned to Paris to study musicology under Maurice Emmanuel and André Pirro. His first published compositions emerged in 1923, and he became a professor of music history at Complutense University of Madrid in 1947. His most renowned work, the "Concierto de Aranjuez," was composed in 1939 for guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza and is celebrated for its central adagio movement, which has become iconic in classical music.

Personal Life

In 1933, Rodrigo married Victoria Kamhi, a Turkish-born pianist he met in Paris. Their marriage lasted until her death in 1997, and they had a daughter, Cecilia, born in 1941. Rodrigo's life was marked by both personal and professional achievements, and he passed away on July 6, 1999, at the age of 97 in Madrid. His legacy continues through his music and the impact he had on the classical guitar repertoire, elevating it to a respected concert instrument.
