Maria Bethânia Viana Teles Veloso was born on June 18, 1946, in Santo Amaro, Bahia, into a family rich in musical heritage. As the sixth of eight children, her early life was influenced by her mother, a musician, and her brother, Caetano Veloso, who would later become a prominent figure in Brazilian music. Initially aspiring to be an actress, Bethânia's path shifted when she was invited to perform in the musical "Boca de Ouro" in 1963, marking her debut on stage. This opportunity led her to join forces with other emerging artists, including Gilberto Gil and Gal Costa, culminating in the successful show "Nós, por exemplo" in 1964.

Bethânia's career took off with the release of her first single, "Carcará," in 1965, which became a protest anthem and solidified her status as a star in Brazil. In 1963, at the age of 17, Bethânia moved to Rio de Janeiro, where she continues to reside. Known for her discretion, she rarely attends social events and has chosen not to have children. A follower of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé, she values her privacy while maintaining a professional presence. In 2017, she began a relationship with stylist Gilda Midani, marrying in 2022, though they divorced in 2025 while continuing to collaborate professionally.
