Early Life

Tego Calderón, born Tegui Calderón Rosario in Santurce, Puerto Rico, is the son of a schoolteacher and a government worker. His family moved to Miami, Florida, where he attended Miami Beach Senior High. It was here that he was exposed to diverse cultures and began studying percussion, playing in a rock band that covered songs by iconic artists like Ozzy Osbourne and Led Zeppelin. Influenced by his parents' love for music, particularly salsa and jazz, Calderón developed a unique style that blended these genres with hip-hop, reflecting urban life in his lyrics.

Career

Calderón's musical journey began in the 1990s, participating in Puerto Rican hip-hop contests. Despite initial rejections from producers, he found his breakthrough in 2000 when he collaborated with Eddie Dee on the hit "En Peligro de Extinción." His debut album, "El Abayarde," released in 2003, sold 300,000 copies and earned a Latin Grammy nomination. Over the years, he released several albums, including "The Underdog/El Subestimado" and "El Que Sabe, Sabe," the latter winning a Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album. Calderón's music evolved to incorporate hip-hop and African influences, showcasing his versatility as an artist.

Film and Other Projects

In addition to music, Calderón ventured into acting, debuting in the film "Illegal Tender" as a character specifically written for him. He also participated in a VH1 documentary about diamond mining, which shifted his perspective on life and inspired his song "Alegria." Notably, he appeared in multiple installments of "The Fast and the Furious" franchise, further solidifying his presence in popular culture.
