Giannis Klearchou Xenakis was born on May 29, 1922, in Brăila, Romania, into a family with a rich musical background. His father, Klearchos Xenakis, was a successful businessman, while his mother, Fotini Pavlou, was a pianist who nurtured his early interest in music. Tragically, Fotini passed away when Giannis was just five years old, a loss that profoundly affected him. He was educated by various governesses and later attended the Anargyrio-Korgialenio boarding school in Greece, where he excelled academically and musically, participating in the boys' choir and memorizing classical works.

Career

Xenakis's career as a composer, architect, and engineer flourished after he moved to France, where he became a prominent figure in contemporary classical and electronic music. His innovative compositions, such as "Metastasis" and "Persephassa," showcased his unique approach to sound and structure, blending mathematical concepts with musical expression. Throughout his career, he released numerous influential albums, including "Musique Métaphysique" and "Electro-Acoustic Music," and collaborated with various artists and orchestras. His contributions to music earned him prestigious accolades, including the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy and recognition as an honorary doctor from the University of Sydney.

Xenakis passed away on February 4, 2001, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering composer who bridged the worlds of music and architecture.
