Biography

Early Life

Sergei Eduardovich Bortkiewicz was born on February 28, 1877, in Kharkov, which was then part of the Russian Empire and is now known as Kharkiv, Ukraine. He hailed from Polish nobility, with parents Edward and Zofia (née Uszyńska) Bortkiewicz. Bortkiewicz spent much of his childhood on the family estate in Artiomovka, where he began his musical education. He studied under notable instructors such as Anatoly Lyadov and Karel van Ark at the Imperial Conservatory of Music in Saint Petersburg.

Career Development

In 1900, Bortkiewicz moved to Leipzig to further his studies, where he was mentored by Alfred Reisenauer and Salomon Jadassohn, both of whom were students of the legendary Franz Liszt. He graduated from the Leipzig Conservatory in July 1902, receiving the prestigious Schumann Prize. After returning to the Russian Empire in 1904, he married Elisabeth Geraklitowa and settled in Berlin, where he began to compose seriously. His early career was marked by significant success, particularly with the premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 16, in 1913, which was conducted by the composer himself.

Later Life and Legacy

Bortkiewicz's life took a turn in 1922 when he moved to Vienna, becoming a naturalized Austrian citizen in 1926.
