Сергій Жадан

Early Life

Serhiy Viktorovych Zhadan was born on August 23, 1974, in Starobilsk, Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine. He graduated from H.S. Skovoroda Kharkiv National Pedagogical University in 1996, focusing on the works of Mykhaylo Semenko and Ukrainian futurist writers of the 1920s. Following his graduation, he spent three years as a graduate student of philology and taught Ukrainian and world literature from 2000 to 2004.

Career

Zhadan began his writing career in 1990, drawing inspiration from the industrial landscapes of eastern Ukraine. His notable works include the novel "Voroshilovgrad," which won the BBC Ukrainian Book of the Year award in 2010 and was adapted into the film "The Wild Fields" in 2018. He has published 12 books of poetry and 7 novels, earning numerous literary accolades, including the Jan Michalski Prize for Literature and the Angelus Award. In addition to his literary pursuits, Zhadan is a musician and has been a member of the ska band Zhadan i Sobaky since 2008.

Political Activism

Zhadan is also known for his political activism, having participated in significant events such as the 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2014 Revolution of Dignity. He has been vocal about his support for Ukraine and has faced violence for his beliefs. His commitment to his country is evident in his writings and public statements, where he identifies as a patriot rather than a nationalist.
