Early Life

Fatima Ibrahim es-Sayyid el-Beltagi, known by her stage name Umm Kulthum, was born on December 30, 1898, in the village of Tamay ez-Zahayra, Egypt. Growing up in a religious family, her father was a rural imam, and her mother was a housewife. Umm Kulthum displayed exceptional singing talent from a young age, learning to sing by listening to her father teach her older brother. By the age of 12, she joined her family's musical ensemble, performing in a boy's cloak to protect her reputation. Her journey to stardom began when she moved to Cairo in 1923, where she was mentored by prominent musicians and composers.

Career

Umm Kulthum's career took off in the mid-1920s when she transitioned into a professional recording artist. She made her first recordings in 1924 and gained significant recognition with her 1927 releases. Her collaboration with poet Ahmed Rami led to the creation of 137 songs, and she became known for her powerful voice and dramatic performances. Throughout her career, she recorded numerous hits, including "أراك عصي الدمع" and "أمل حياتي," and became a cultural icon in the Arab world. Her music blended modern aesthetics with classical artistry, and she was known for her tightly managed public image.

Personal Life

Despite her immense success, Umm Kulthum faced personal challenges, including health issues related to Graves' disease, which required surgery in the 1950s. After her recovery, she continued to perform, often wearing sunglasses as a trademark. In 1954, she married Dr. Hasan al-Hifnawi, although they had no children. Her legacy as a singer and actress remains unparalleled, and she is often referred to as "The Voice of Egypt" and "Egypt's Fourth Pyramid."

Umm Kulthum is celebrated as one of the greatest singers in the history of Arabic music, influencing countless artists across the globe. Her songs continue to resonate, and she is revered in Egypt, where she is affectionately called "Elsett," meaning "The Lady."
