Omar Khayyam, born Ghiyāth al-Dīn Abū al-Fatḥ ʿUmar ibn Ibrāhīm Nīshāpūrī on May 18, 1048, in Nishapur, Iran, was a prominent Persian poet, mathematician, and polymath. His name, Khayyam, translates to 'tent-maker' in Arabic, hinting at his family's possible trade. Growing up in a significant cultural center of the Seljuk Empire, Khayyam was exposed to a rich intellectual environment. He memorized much of the Quran in his youth and studied various subjects, including religious sciences, Arabic grammar, and literature, under esteemed scholars.
