Early Life

Lau Tak-wah, known as Andy Lau, was born on September 27, 1961, in Tai Po, British Hong Kong. He is the fourth of six siblings in a family that experienced a significant shift in fortune when his father, a fireman, moved them to the slums of Diamond Hill for better educational opportunities. Despite the challenges of his childhood, including fetching water multiple times a day due to a lack of plumbing, Lau excelled academically and graduated from Ho Lap College. Raised in a nominally Buddhist household, he developed interests in Chinese calligraphy and hair styling during his formative years.

Career

Lau's career began in 1980 when he enrolled in TVB's actor training program, quickly rising to fame with his role in the series "The Return of the Condor Heroes". He became one of the Five Tiger Generals of TVB in the 1980s and transitioned into film, gaining recognition for his performances in movies like "A Moment of Romance" and "Running Out of Time". Over his four-decade career, Lau has won numerous awards, including the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor three times and the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor twice. He was also recognized in the Guinness World Records for the most awards won by a Cantopop male artist.

Personal Life

In addition to his successful career, Lau is known for his philanthropic efforts, establishing the Andy Lau Charity Foundation in 1994 to support youth education and aid those in need. He has had two notable public relationships, first with actress Yu Ke-Hsin and later with Carol Chu, whom he secretly married in Las Vegas in 2008. The couple welcomed their daughter, Hanna, in 2012. Despite facing a serious injury in 2017, Lau made a full recovery and continues to be a prominent figure in the entertainment industry.
