Early Life

Zhou Xuan, originally named Su Pu, was born on August 1, 1920, in Wujin, China, into an intellectual family. Her father, Su Diaofu, was a pastor and teacher, while her mother, Gu Meizhen, was an alumna of Jinling Women's University. Tragically, Zhou was abducted by her uncle at a young age and later adopted by the Zhou family in Shanghai, where she took on the name Zhou Xiaohong. At 13, she adopted the stage name Zhou Xuan, meaning 'beautiful jade' in Chinese.

Career

Zhou Xuan began her artistic journey in 1932 as a member of Li Jinhui's Bright Moon Song and Dance Troupe. By the age of 12, she had already earned the nickname "Golden Voice" for her remarkable singing talent. Her film career took off in 1935, and she became a household name by 1937 with her role in the film "Street Angel." Over her career, she recorded more than 200 songs and starred in over 40 films, becoming one of China's Seven Great Singing Stars. Despite her success, her life was marred by personal struggles, including mental health issues and tumultuous relationships.

Personal Life

Zhou Xuan's personal life was fraught with challenges. She married composer Yan Hua in 1938, but their marriage ended in divorce by 1941 due to mutual suspicions of infidelity. Following this, she had several relationships, including a significant one with silk merchant Zhu Huaide, which ended in heartbreak. Zhou had two sons, Zhou Min and Zhou Wei, and faced numerous hardships, including financial difficulties and mental health crises.

Cultural Legacy

Zhou Xuan's influence on Chinese music endures, with her songs remaining popular in Golden Oldies collections. Her life has inspired various adaptations, including television series that depict her story, although some have faced criticism for misrepresenting her legacy. Biographies written by her family members continue to celebrate her contributions to music and film, ensuring her memory lives on in Chinese culture.
