Early Life

William Everett Preston was born on September 2, 1946, in Houston, Texas, and later moved to Los Angeles with his mother, Robbie Lee Williams. A child prodigy, he was self-taught in music and began performing at a young age, playing organ for gospel legends like Mahalia Jackson by the age of ten. His early exposure to music led him to appear on Nat King Cole's NBC TV show and in the 1958 film "St. Louis Blues," where he portrayed a young W.C. Handy. By 1960, he was a pianist for Andraé Crouch and the Church of God in Christ Singers, contributing to the gospel hit "The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power."

Career

Preston's career took off in the 1960s when he joined Little Richard's band as an organist and met the Beatles, earning him the title of the "Fifth Beatle". He released his debut album, "16 Yr. Old Soul," in 1963 and became a sought-after session musician, working with icons like Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, and the Rolling Stones. His solo career flourished with hits such as "That's the Way God Planned It," "Outa-Space," and "Will It Go Round in Circles." He co-wrote the classic "You Are So Beautiful," which became a major hit for Joe Cocker. Throughout his career, Preston was known for his unique blend of R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel music.
