Eric Carmen

Early Life

Eric Howard Carmen was born on August 11, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, to a family of Russian Jewish immigrants. From a young age, he showed a passion for music, entertaining his family with impressions and participating in music programs. By age six, he was taking violin lessons from his aunt, a member of the Cleveland Orchestra. His musical journey continued as he learned piano and later taught himself guitar, inspired by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Career

Carmen's professional music career began while attending John Carroll University, where he joined the band Cyrus Erie. After the band's disbandment, he formed the Raspberries with fellow musicians, becoming the lead vocalist and songwriter. The Raspberries gained fame in the early 1970s with hits like "Go All the Way." Following the band's breakup in 1975, Carmen launched a successful solo career, achieving global recognition with songs such as "All by Myself" and "Hungry Eyes." He later toured with Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band and reunited with the Raspberries in 2004 for a series of acclaimed performances.

Personal Life

Carmen was married three times, with his last marriage to former newscaster Amy Murphy lasting until his death in 2024. He had two children with his second wife, Susan Brown. In his later years, Carmen moved back to Ohio and was known to support President Donald Trump. After his passing, a legal dispute arose between his children and his wife regarding his estate, which was ultimately dismissed by a federal judge.
