Yusuf Islam, originally known as Cat Stevens, was born Steven Demetre Georgiou on July 21, 1948, in London, England. He was the youngest child of a Greek Cypriot father and a Swedish mother, growing up in a family that operated a restaurant above the Moulin Rouge in Soho. His parents divorced when he was young, but they continued to run the family business. Despite a mixed religious background, he attended a Roman Catholic school and developed an early interest in music, learning to play the piano and later the guitar, inspired by the Beatles.

Stevens began his music career in the 1960s, adopting the stage name Cat Stevens. He gained fame with hit albums such as "Matthew & Son," "Tea for the Tillerman," and "Teaser and the Firecat," blending rock, pop, and folk music. Yusuf Islam, commonly known by his stage names Cat Stevens or Yusuf/Cat Stevens, is a British singer-songwriter and musician.
