D12

Formation

D12, an American hip-hop group from Detroit, Michigan, was formed in 1996 by Proof, who invited local rappers including Bizarre, Bugz, and members of Da Brigade, Denaun Porter and Kuniva. The group initially gained traction in the local scene, with Bizarre earning recognition as Inner City Entertainment's "Flava of the Week" and Proof winning a freestyling competition. In 1997, they released their debut extended play, The Underground EP, featuring guest appearances from Eminem and Eye-Kyu. Tragically, the group faced a significant loss when Bugz was shot and killed in 1999, leading to Eminem joining the group as a replacement, solidifying the core lineup.

Breakthrough

D12 achieved mainstream success with their debut album, Devil's Night, released in 2001, which showcased their unique style and alter egos, with each member adopting a persona. The group continued to build on their success with the follow-up album, D12 World, and several hit singles, including "Purple Pills" and "Fight Music." Their music often blended elements of horrorcore and comedy hip-hop, setting them apart in the genre. The group was signed to Shady Records and Interscope Records, further elevating their profile in the music industry.

Legacy

Despite their success, the group faced challenges, including the death of Proof in 2006, which deeply affected the remaining members. D12 has left a lasting impact on the hip-hop scene, known for their innovative approach and the ability to blend humor with serious themes. They have continued to release music, including mixtapes and singles, maintaining their presence in the industry while honoring their late members.
