Elf

Formation

Elf was formed in 1970, evolving from the earlier band Ronnie Dio and the Prophets, which had transformed into the Electric Elves in 1967. The original lineup included the iconic Ronnie James Dio on lead vocals, Gary Driscoll on drums, Mickey Lee Soule on keyboards, and David “Rock” Feinstein on guitar. The band underwent a name change from Electric Elves to simply Elf in 1972, marking a new era in their musical journey.

Key Releases and Lineup Changes

Elf released their self-titled debut album in 1972, produced by members of Deep Purple, which helped them gain traction as an opening act for the legendary band. The lineup saw changes when Craig Gruber joined as the bassist in 1973, allowing Dio to focus solely on vocals. The band released their second album, "Carolina County Ball," in 1974, further solidifying their presence in the rock scene. However, in 1975, after recording three albums, Elf disbanded, with most members, including Dio, moving on to join the newly formed group Rainbow.

Legacy

Despite their brief existence, Elf's influence on rock music, particularly in the realms of blues and hard rock, remains significant. Their sound and Dio's powerful vocals laid the groundwork for his later success with Rainbow and Black Sabbath, ensuring that Elf's legacy endures in the annals of rock history.
