Биография
Early Life
Ronald James Padavona, known professionally as Ronnie James Dio, was born on July 10, 1942, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to Italian-American parents. His family moved to Cortland, New York, shortly after his birth due to his father's military service during World War II. Dio's early exposure to music came from listening to opera, influenced by tenor Mario Lanza, and he began formal musical training at the age of five, learning to play the trumpet. During high school, he formed his first rock band, The Vegas Kings, which later evolved into Ronnie and the Rumblers and then Ronnie and the Red Caps. Dio's passion for music led him to decline a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music, opting instead to pursue a degree in pharmacology at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Career
Dio's musical career took off in 1957 when he formed The Vegas Kings, which eventually transformed into Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. He adopted the stage name "Dio"—Italian for "God"—inspired by various stories, including one from his grandmother. Throughout his career, Dio fronted several influential bands, including Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his own band, Dio. His powerful, operatic voice and poetic lyrics, often exploring themes of fantasy and mythology, set him apart in the heavy metal genre. Dio's contributions to music were significant, as he brought a sense of intellectual depth to heavy metal, proving that the genre could be both thoughtful and artistic.
Personal Life
Dio married his first wife, Loretta Berardi, in 1963, with whom he adopted a son before their divorce in 1972. He later married Wendy Walters in 1978, who also became his manager. Despite their separation, they remained married until his passing. Dio faced a gardening accident in 2003 that severed his thumb, raising concerns about his ability to perform his iconic "devil's horns" gesture, but he was able to recover. Dio's legacy as a pioneering figure in heavy metal music endures, celebrated for his unique voice and contributions to the genre until his death on May 16, 2010.
