Joey Ramone

Early Life

Jeffrey Ross Hyman, known to the world as Joey Ramone, was born on May 19, 1951, in Queens, New York City, into a Jewish family. Growing up in Forest Hills, he was a misfit and loner, often feeling out of place among his peers. Despite his struggles, he found solace in music, beginning to play the drums at the age of 13. Influenced by iconic bands like The Beatles and The Who, Joey's passion for music would shape his future. He was diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder at 18, and his health was often frail due to Marfan syndrome, which contributed to his striking physique.

Career

In 1974, Joey co-founded the legendary punk rock band, the Ramones, alongside Johnny Ramone and Dee Dee Ramone. Initially the drummer, he transitioned to lead vocalist when Dee Dee's vocal cords could not handle the rigors of live performances. The band quickly gained notoriety for their fast-paced songs and unique style, with Joey's distinctive voice becoming a defining characteristic of punk rock. His vocal style, marked by signature cracks and snarls, set him apart from his contemporaries, earning him recognition as one of punk's most iconic voices.

Personal Life

Joey's personal life was as colorful as his music career. He dated Linda Marie Danielle, later known as Linda Ramone, whom he met at CBGB in 1976. Their tumultuous relationship inspired the Ramones' song "Merry Christmas (I Don't Want to Fight Tonight)." Despite their engagement, the couple eventually split when Linda began dating Johnny Ramone, adding a layer of complexity to the band's dynamics. Joey's life was marked by both his artistic achievements and personal struggles, making him a true countercultural icon until his passing in 2001.
