Early Life

Boris Claudio "Lalo" Schifrin was born on June 21, 1932, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Growing up in a musically rich environment, his father, Luis Schifrin, was the second violinist of the Buenos Aires Philharmonic. This exposure to music from an early age, combined with his Jewish and Catholic heritage, shaped his artistic sensibilities. At six, he began piano lessons with Enrique Barenboim, and later studied under Andrea Karalin and Juan Carlos Paz. Although he pursued sociology and law at the University of Buenos Aires, his passion for music led him to the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under notable composers like Olivier Messiaen.

Career

Schifrin's career took off in the 1950s when he returned to Argentina and formed a jazz big band. He became known for his innovative compositions that blended jazz with Latin American elements. His work in film and television scoring, particularly the iconic "Mission: Impossible" theme, solidified his reputation as a leading composer. Over his career, he released numerous albums, including "Classic Film Themes" and "Piano Español," showcasing his versatility across genres such as jazz, bossa nova, and classical music. Schifrin received multiple accolades, including five Grammy Awards and an Academy Honorary Award, recognizing his significant contributions to music.

Personal Life

In 1958, Schifrin married Silvia Schon, with whom he had two children before their divorce. He later married Donna Cockrell in 1971, and they had a son together. His second wife played a crucial role in managing his business and record label. Schifrin published his autobiography, "Mission Impossible: My Life in Music," in 2008, reflecting on his expansive career and the endless possibilities of sound in music.
