M. Shadows

Early Life

Matthew Charles Sanders, known professionally as M. Shadows, was born on July 31, 1981, in Fountain Valley, California, and raised in Huntington Beach. Growing up in a Catholic household, he developed an early interest in music, particularly hard rock, after his father gifted him his first cassette. Influenced by iconic bands like Guns N' Roses, Shadows began playing guitar and honed his musical skills through piano lessons. He attended Huntington Beach High School, where he briefly played in a punk band called "Successful Failure" before forming Avenged Sevenfold in 1999 with childhood friends Zacky Vengeance, The Rev, and Matt Wendt.

Career

As the lead vocalist of Avenged Sevenfold, M. Shadows has made a significant impact on the heavy metal genre. His vocal style has evolved over the years, showcasing a range that spans nearly four octaves. Initially known for his harsh metalcore growls, Shadows transitioned to a more melodic approach with the band's major label debut, "City of Evil," in 2005. This shift was aided by vocal coach Ron Anderson, who helped him develop a gritty tone. Shadows' artistry has been recognized, as he was voted third in Ultimate Guitar's list of Top 25 Greatest Modern Frontmen in 2017.

Personal Life and Views

M. Shadows married Valary DiBenedetto on October 17, 2009, and they have two sons, River and Cash. His personal life is intertwined with his bandmates, as his wife is the twin sister of guitarist Synyster Gates' wife. Shadows is also known for his activism; during the George Floyd protests in 2020, he published an op-ed supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, urging compassion within the rock and metal communities. He continues to advocate for empathy and understanding, particularly regarding issues affecting marginalized groups.
