Mastodon

Formation

Mastodon is an American heavy metal band formed on January 13, 2000, in Atlanta, Georgia. The band was created when drummer Brann Dailor and guitarist Bill Kelliher moved from New York and met bassist Troy Sanders and guitarist Brent Hinds at a High on Fire concert. They bonded over their mutual appreciation for sludge metal bands like Melvins and Neurosis, as well as heavy metal legends Iron Maiden. Initially, the band recorded a nine-song demo featuring Eric Saner on vocals, but after his departure, Hinds and Sanders took over vocal duties.

Over the years, they released several critically acclaimed albums, including "Leviathan," "Blood Mountain," and "Crack the Skye," showcasing their unique blend of progressive and sludge metal. The band's lineup remained stable for 24 years, with Dailor, Kelliher, Sanders, and Hinds at the core until Hinds' departure in March 2025.
