Meshuggah

Formation

Meshuggah, a Swedish extreme metal band, was formed in 1987 in Umeå by lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Jens Kidman and guitarist Fredrik Thordendal. The name "Meshuggah" is derived from the Yiddish word for "crazy," which Kidman discovered in an American street slang dictionary. The band initially recorded several demos, but after a brief disbandment, Kidman and Thordendal reformed the group, leading to the release of their self-titled EP in 1989, known as "Psykisk Testbild," which gained them local recognition.

Lineup Changes and Key Releases

The band's lineup solidified in 1990 with the addition of drummer Tomas Haake, and they signed with Nuclear Blast, releasing their debut album, "Contradictions Collapse." Over the years, Meshuggah has released several influential albums, including "Destroy Erase Improve," "Chaosphere," and "Nothing," showcasing their unique blend of progressive, extreme, and avant-garde metal. The lineup has remained stable since 2004, featuring founding members Kidman and Thordendal, along with rhythm guitarist Mårten Hagström, drummer Tomas Haake, and bassist Dick Lövgren.

Legacy

Meshuggah is often hailed as one of the most important bands in metal, credited with pioneering the djent subgenre and influencing countless modern metal acts. Their complex musical style, characterized by polyrhythms and syncopated riffs, has earned them a cult following and critical acclaim. Despite limited mainstream success, they have left an indelible mark on the heavy music landscape, with their latest album, "Immutable," released in April 2022, continuing to push the boundaries of metal.
