Formation
No Doubt is an American rock band formed in December 1986 in Anaheim, California. The band was initially created by Eric Stefani and John Spence, who met at a Dairy Queen and decided to gather musicians to play music. The original lineup included Eric on keyboards, Gwen Stefani (his sister) on backing vocals, and John Spence as the lead vocalist, along with several other musicians. After a series of lineup changes, Tony Kanal joined as the bassist in 1987, and he soon began a romantic relationship with Gwen, which they kept secret for a year.
Breakthrough
The band faced a tragic setback in December 1987 when lead vocalist John Spence died by suicide. After a brief disbandment, No Doubt regrouped with Alan Meade taking over vocals. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1992, followed by "The Beacon Street Collection" in 1995, which showcased their ska punk roots. However, it was their third album, "Tragic Kingdom" (1995), that catapulted them to fame, featuring hits like "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak."
Evolution and Influence
As the band evolved, they incorporated various musical styles, including pop rock, reggae fusion, and ska. For most of its career, the band has consisted of vocalist and founding member Gwen Stefani, guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young. Keyboardist Eric Stefani, Gwen's brother, was also a founding member but quit in 1994. From the mid-1990s, trombonist Gabrial McNair and trumpeter Stephen Bradley have performed with the band as session and touring musicians.
