Philip Selway

Early Life

Philip James Selway was born on May 23, 1967, in Abingdon, Oxfordshire. He developed a passion for music early on, picking up drums and guitar at the age of 15, inspired by bands like Joy Division, the Clash, and the Velvet Underground. Selway's musical journey began at Abingdon School, where he met future bandmates and formed the group On a Friday in 1985. After completing his education, he studied English and history at Liverpool Polytechnic while also working various jobs, including as a TEFL teacher and a copyeditor.

Career

In 1991, On a Friday signed with EMI and rebranded as Radiohead, achieving early success with their hit single "Creep" in 1992. The band's third album, "OK Computer" (1997), catapulted them to fame, and Selway's drumming evolved as Radiohead began incorporating electronic elements in their music with the release of "Kid A" (2000). This shift allowed Selway to explore new dynamics in his drumming, enhancing his creative expression. Over the years, he has contributed to various projects, including drumming on tracks for bandmates' solo albums. Selway was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Radiohead in 2019.

Personal Life

Philip Selway is married to Cait, and together they have three sons. The family faced a tragic loss in 2006 when Selway's mother passed away unexpectedly, leading to the cancellation of a Radiohead concert. As of February 2023, Selway resides in London and remains a devoted fan of Oxford United FC.
