Formation

Buranovskiye Babushki, also known as the Buranovo Grannies, is a unique ethno-pop group hailing from the village of Buranovo in Udmurtia, Russia. This ensemble consists of eight elderly women who have come together to celebrate their cultural heritage through music. The group is known for its vibrant performances and traditional folk songs, which resonate with audiences both locally and internationally.

Breakthrough

The group gained significant recognition when they participated in Russia's Eurovision song selection in 2010 with their song "Dlinnaja-dlinnaja beresta i kak sdelat' iz nee ajšon". Although they finished third, their journey did not end there. In 2012, they returned to the Eurovision stage with the catchy tune "Party for Everybody," which was performed partially in English. Their efforts paid off as they won the selection, ultimately representing Russia at the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where they achieved an impressive second place with 259 points, receiving votes from 40 countries.

Legacy

Beyond their musical achievements, Buranovskiye Babushki are also known for their philanthropic efforts. In 2010, they initiated a fund to rebuild the Trinity Church in Buranovo, donating all their income to this cause. The church, originally built in 1865, was consecrated in 2016, marking a significant milestone for the group and their community. Their success at Eurovision has also been noted as a reflection of the growing appreciation for Russian folk music, influencing future acts in the genre.
