Early Life

Eduard Anatolyevich Khil was born on September 4, 1934, in Smolensk, Soviet Union. His early life was marked by hardship; after his parents' separation, he was raised by his mother. During World War II, he was evacuated to a children's home in Penza Oblast, where he performed for wounded soldiers. Khil was reunited with his mother in 1943 and later moved to Leningrad, where he graduated from a printing college before enrolling in the Leningrad Conservatory in 1955. He graduated in 1960, having already begun to perform operatic roles, including Figaro in "The Marriage of Figaro".

Career

Khil's career took a turn towards pop music after attending a concert by Klavdiya Shulzhenko. He gained recognition in the 1960s, winning the "All Russian Competition for Performers" in 1962 and performing at the "Festival of Soviet Songs" in 1965. His success continued with numerous awards, including the prestigious title of People's Artist of the RSFSR in 1974. He toured over 80 countries and became a beloved figure in Leningrad, known for his powerful baritone voice. In the late 1990s, he briefly stepped back from the limelight, working in a café in Paris before re-emerging with a new project, Khil and the Sons.

Personal Life

Khil married ballerina Zoya Pravdina in December 1958, and they had one son, Dmitri, born in 1963. The couple remained together until Khil's death in 2012. Khil's family name is believed to have Spanish origins, linked to the surname Gil.

Legacy

Khil's legacy was revitalized in 2009 when a 1976 video of him singing a non-lexical version of "I Am Very Glad, As I Am Finally Returning Back Home" went viral, earning him the nickname "Mr. Trololo". This unexpected fame introduced him to a new generation and solidified his status as a cultural icon in Russia. Khil passed away in 2012, leaving behind a rich musical legacy and a unique place in internet culture.
