Kumiko Kōda, known professionally as Koda Kumi, was born on November 13, 1982, in Kyoto, Japan, into a family rich in musical heritage. Her grandfather was a master of the Shakuhachi, and her mother taught Koto, which inspired Koda's early aspirations to become a singer. Despite her passion for music, Koda faced challenges during her school years, often feeling ostracized due to her appearance. However, her determination shone through when she auditioned for Avex's "Dream Audition," where she impressively placed second out of 120,000 participants, leading to her signing with the Avex sub-label Rhythm Zone.

Koda Kumi made her debut on December 6, 2000, with the single "Take Back," which marked the beginning of a prolific career in the J-pop and R&B genres.
