Early Life

Jacky Cheung Hok-yau was born on July 10, 1961, in Quarry Bay, Hong Kong. Growing up in a cramped 100 square feet apartment with his parents and two siblings, he was surrounded by a large extended family. His father hailed from Tianjin and his mother from Shanghai. Cheung attended North Point Government Primary School and graduated from Literary College in 1978. He is fluent in Cantonese, Mandarin, and basic English, and is known for his rich baritone voice and dramatic vibrato.

Musical Career

Cheung's music career began in 1984 when he won the Amateur 18-Hong Kong district singing contest, which led to a contract with Polygram Records. His debut album, "Smile," released in 1985, sold over 300,000 copies in Hong Kong, followed by his second album, "Amour," which sold over 400,000 copies. Despite initial challenges in the competitive Cantopop scene, Cheung achieved significant success in the 1990s, with his album "The Goodbye Kiss" selling over 4 million copies. He has embarked on numerous concert tours, including the record-setting 1/2 Century World Tour and the highly attended A Classic Tour.

Acting Career

In addition to his music, Cheung has made a name for himself in film, debuting in 1986. He has received multiple awards for his acting, including Best Supporting Actor at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Award. His song "Perhaps Love" from the film of the same name won accolades at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

Personal Life

Cheung married actress May Lo in 1996, and they have two daughters. A Buddhist and a vegetarian, he has also been involved in community work, including donations to children's charities. Cheung's career has made him a beloved figure in Hong Kong and beyond, earning him the title of the "God of Songs" and recognition as one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop.
