Agnès Jaoui

Early Life

Agnès Jaoui was born on October 19, 1964, in Antony, Hauts-de-Seine, France, into a family of writers. Her father, Hubert Jaoui, and mother, Gyza Jaoui, who was a pioneering figure in transactional analysis, instilled a love for the arts in her from a young age. At the age of eight, the family moved to Paris, where Jaoui began her journey in the performing arts. She started theatre in high school at the prestigious Lycée Henri-IV and later joined the Cours Florent at 15, where she honed her craft.

Career

Jaoui's career took off when she was cast in the film "Hôtel de France" in 1987, directed by Patrice Chéreau. She quickly became known for her collaborations with Jean-Pierre Bacri, both as a partner in life and in art. Together, they wrote the acclaimed play "Cuisine et dépendances," which was adapted into a film in 1992. Their work on the film "Smoking/No Smoking" won them the César Award for Best Original Screenplay or Adaptation in 1994, marking a significant milestone in her career. Jaoui continued to explore her artistic talents, not only as a screenwriter and actress but also as a singer, contributing to the world music genre with albums like "Canta" and "Nostalgias."

Personal Life

In her personal life, Jaoui adopted two children from Brazil in 2012, showcasing her commitment to family and motherhood. She was in a long-term relationship with Jean-Pierre Bacri from 1987 until their breakup in 2012, after which they maintained a professional relationship. Jaoui is also an advocate for gender equality in cinema, being a member of the 50/50 collective. Tragically, her family has been affected by violence, with several members being victims of the Hamas October 7 attacks.
