Formation

A-ha is a Norwegian synth-pop band formed in Oslo in 1982 by lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Paul Waaktaar-Savoy, and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen. The trio initially struggled to find their footing in the music industry, relocating to London to pursue their dreams. They adopted the name "A-ha" after Harket discovered it in Waaktaar's songbook, despite the original song being deemed unworthy. Their early influences included iconic bands like the Doors and Joy Division, and they were inspired by the burgeoning synth-pop scene in the UK.

Breakthrough

A-ha achieved international fame with their debut album, "Hunting High and Low," released in 1985, which featured the hit single "Take On Me." The song's innovative music video, characterized by its unique animation style, became a defining moment for the band, earning them significant recognition and multiple awards, including eight MTV Video Music Awards in 1986. Over the years, A-ha released several successful albums, including "Scoundrel Days," "Stay on These Roads," and "Minor Earth | Major Sky," solidifying their status as one of Norway's most successful musical exports.

Legacy

A-ha's influence extends beyond their chart-topping hits; they hold a Guinness World Record for the largest paying audience at a pop concert, with 198,000 attendees in Rio de Janeiro. Their music has been featured in numerous films and television shows, and they recorded the James Bond theme song "The Living Daylights." The band has received numerous accolades, including nine Spellemann Awards, and in 2012, all three members were appointed Knights of the 1st Class of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for their contributions to music. A-ha remains a beloved figure in pop music, known for their melodic sound and lasting impact on the genre.
