Alan Cumming

Early Life

Alan Cumming was born on January 27, 1965, in Aberfeldy, Perthshire, Scotland. Growing up in a feudal environment, he was the son of Mary Darling, an insurance company secretary, and Alex Cumming, the head forester of Panmure Estate. Cumming's childhood was marked by emotional and physical violence from his father, which he later described in his autobiography, "Not My Father's Son." Despite these challenges, he developed a love for reading and the arts, which would shape his future career.

Career

Cumming's career began in 1984 with his television debut in the ITV Granada series "Travelling Man." He gained recognition in the 1990s with roles in various television series and films, including the BBC comedy "Bernard and the Genie" and the film "Prague," which earned him accolades at the Atlantic Film Festival. His stage career flourished as he won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as the Emcee in the Broadway revival of "Cabaret" in 1998. Cumming has also released several albums, including "I Bought a Blue Car Today" and "Alan Cumming Sings Sappy Songs: Live at the Cafe Carlyle," showcasing his musical talents.

Personal Life and Activism

Cumming is openly bisexual and has had several notable relationships, including a marriage to actress Hilary Lyon and a long-term partnership with illustrator Grant Shaffer, whom he married in 2012. He is an advocate for LGBT rights and has supported various charities, including those focused on AIDS awareness. Cumming has also been politically active, endorsing causes such as Scottish independence and participating in campaigns for same-sex marriage. In 2017, he received PETA's Humanitarian Award for his advocacy work. Cumming became a dual citizen of the United States in 2008, further solidifying his connection to both his Scottish roots and his life in America.
