Alan Silvestri

Early Life

Alan Anthony Silvestri was born on March 26, 1950, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to Italian immigrant grandparents who settled in the area in 1909. Growing up in a musical environment, he graduated from Teaneck High School in 1968 and later attended the Berklee College of Music for two years. His early musical journey included a brief stint as a drummer in a local rock band called the Wildcats in 1966.

Career

Silvestri moved to Los Angeles in 1970, initially struggling to find his footing in the film industry. His big break came in 1972 when he was asked to score the low-budget film "The Doberman Gang," despite having no prior experience in film composition. He quickly learned the ropes, even using beer cans for percussion at one point. From 1978 to 1983, he became the main composer for the television series "CHiPs," contributing music for 95 episodes. His collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis began with the film "Romancing the Stone" in 1984, leading to a long-standing partnership that produced iconic scores for films like the "Back to the Future" trilogy, "Forrest Gump," and "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."

Personal Life

Outside of his illustrious career, Silvestri is a family man, married to his wife Sandra, with whom he has three children. They own Silvestri Vineyards in Carmel Valley, California, where he also operates a wine tasting room. An adventurous spirit, Silvestri is a licensed pilot and enjoys flying his own aircraft, a King Air 65-C90A. His contributions to music have earned him numerous accolades, including two Grammy Awards and two Primetime Emmy Awards, solidifying his legacy as a prominent figure in film music composition.
