Alannah Myles

Early Life

Alannah Myles, born Alannah Byles on December 25, 1958, in Toronto, Ontario, is a celebrated Canadian singer-songwriter. She is the daughter of William Douglas Byles, a notable figure in the Canadian broadcasting industry, and the second of five children. Growing up in Ontario, Myles was immersed in music from a young age, composing her first songs around the age of nine and participating in a songwriting group for the Kiwanis Music Festival by age twelve.

Career

At 18, Myles began performing solo gigs across southern Ontario, where she met Christopher Ward, a recording artist and songwriter. With his guidance, she formed her own band, performing rock and blues covers while refining her original material. Changing her surname from Byles to Myles at 19, she pursued a career in entertainment, funding her music demos through appearances in TV commercials. After several rejections, she signed her first record contract with Atlantic Records in 1987. Her self-titled debut album was released shortly after, featuring the iconic hit "Black Velvet," which topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1990 and earned her both a Grammy Award and a Juno Award.

Myles has also made appearances in various TV and film productions, including a role in the 1984 series "The Kids of Degrassi Street" and an episode of "War of the Worlds" shortly after her debut album's release. Her career has been marked by a blend of musical talent and on-screen charisma, solidifying her status in the Canadian music scene.
