Albert Finney

Early Life

Albert Finney was born on May 9, 1936, in Salford, Lancashire, as the youngest of three children and the only son of Albert Finney, a bookmaker, and Alice (née Hobson). He received his education at Tootal Drive Primary School and Salford Grammar School before attending the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which he graduated in 1956. During his time at RADA, Finney made his television debut in a production of Oliver Goldsmith's "She Stoops to Conquer," showcasing his early talent.

Career

Finney's career took off in the early 1960s when he gained fame for his film roles, starting with his debut in "The Entertainer" (1960), directed by Tony Richardson. He became a prominent figure in both theatre and film, known for his versatility and powerful performances. Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, including a BAFTA Award for Most Promising Newcomer and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Finney's notable works include "Tom Jones," for which he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor, and "Erin Brockovich," where he earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance.

Personal Life

Finney's personal life included three marriages, first to actress Jane Wenham, with whom he had a son, Simon. He later married French actress Anouk Aimée, and finally, Penelope Delmage, with whom he remained until his death. In 2011, he revealed that he had been battling kidney cancer, which he had been diagnosed with five years earlier. Finney passed away on February 7, 2019, at the age of 82, due to a chest infection.

Legacy

Despite his success, Finney declined a CBE in 1980 and a knighthood in 2000, criticizing such honors for perpetuating snobbery. His contributions to film and theatre have left a lasting impact, and he is remembered as one of Britain's most talented actors, with a career that spanned over five decades.
