Early Life

Albert, Prince Consort, was born on August 26, 1819, at Schloss Rosenau, near Coburg, Germany. He was the second son of Ernest III, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, and Louise of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg. His early life was marked by familial turmoil, including his parents' turbulent marriage and eventual separation. Albert and his elder brother, Ernest, shared a close bond during their youth, which was disrupted by their mother's exile and subsequent death when Albert was just 12 years old.

Marriage and Role as Consort

On February 10, 1840, Albert married his first cousin, Queen Victoria, and became the Prince Consort. His title was officially granted in 1857, and he played a significant role in supporting Victoria during her reign. Albert was deeply involved in public life, advocating for military reforms and modernization, particularly after the death of the Duke of Wellington. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Prince Consort's Library at Aldershot and worked on improving army training.

Legacy

Albert's death on December 14, 1861, profoundly affected Queen Victoria, who withdrew from public life. Despite his wishes for no monuments, numerous memorials were erected in his honor, including the Royal Albert Hall and the Albert Memorial in London. Albert is remembered for his efforts to remodel the monarchy as a national institution and for his belief that the royal family should remain above politics. His legacy continues to influence the British monarchy today.
