Early Life

Alejandro González Iñárritu was born on August 15, 1963, in Mexico City, the youngest of seven siblings. His family background was notable; his maternal grandfather was a prominent lawyer and justice of the Supreme Court of Mexico. Despite his family's status, Iñárritu faced challenges early in life, including being expelled from high school due to poor grades and misbehavior. At 16, he briefly ran away to Acapulco, influenced by the film "Hair," but returned home shortly after. He later worked as a sailor on cargo boats, which allowed him to travel extensively and experience different cultures, ultimately leading him to discover his passion for cinema after watching the film "Yol" by Yılmaz Güney.

Career

Iñárritu began his professional journey in 1984 as a radio host at WFM, Mexico's leading rock music station, where he crafted playlists and interviewed renowned artists like Robert Plant and Carlos Santana. His early career also included composing music for Mexican films and producing television content. In 2000, he made his directorial debut with "Amores perros," which was a critical success and marked the beginning of his rise in the film industry. Over the years, Iñárritu has directed several acclaimed films, including "Birdman" and "The Revenant," earning numerous awards, including five Academy Awards and three BAFTA Awards. He has expressed that music has significantly influenced his artistic development, often integrating it into his storytelling.

Personal Life

Iñárritu has been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which he has openly discussed. He is married to Maria Eladia Hagerman, an editor and graphic designer, and they have two children together. In 2009, he was among several filmmakers who signed a petition supporting director Roman Polanski, advocating for the freedom of filmmakers at international festivals. Iñárritu's work and views reflect his deep engagement with the human condition, making him a significant figure in contemporary cinema.
