Early Life

Alessandro Baricco was born on January 25, 1958, in Turin, Italy. He pursued higher education in philosophy under the guidance of Gianni Vattimo and also studied piano, showcasing his early passion for both intellectual and artistic pursuits.

Career

Baricco's career as a writer and performer began with his debut novel, "Castelli di rabbia" (translated as "Lands of Glass"), published in 1991. He quickly gained recognition for his unique narrative style, which led to his works becoming best-sellers in Italy and France. His literary contributions extend beyond novels; he has published essays on music criticism, including "Il genio in fuga" (1988) about Gioachino Rossini, and "L'anima di Hegel e le mucche del Wisconsin" (1992), exploring the relationship between music and modernity.

In addition to his writing, Baricco co-founded the Scuola Holden in Turin, a creative writing school that offers courses in various narrative techniques. His theatrical monologue "Novecento" was adapted into the acclaimed film "The Legend of 1900," directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. Baricco also collaborated with the French band Air, producing the album "City Reading," which features his readings set to their music.

Personal Life

Residing in his hometown of Turin, Baricco is a father of two and lives with his girlfriend, Gloria Campaner. In January 2022, he publicly announced his diagnosis of chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, a condition that has impacted his life but has not diminished his creative output.
