Early Life

Alka Yagnik was born on March 20, 1966, in Kolkata, India, into a Gujarati family. Her father, Dharmendra Shankar, and her mother, Shubha, who was a singer of Indian classical music, nurtured her musical talent from a young age. At just six years old, Alka began singing for Akashvani (All India Radio) in Calcutta. By the age of ten, her mother moved her to Mumbai to pursue a career in music. Despite being advised to wait until her voice matured, Alka's mother was determined to get her daughter a break in the industry. A letter of recommendation from Raj Kapoor led to Alka's introduction to the renowned music director Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar, who offered her a choice between immediate work as a dubbing artist or a later opportunity as a singer. Her mother chose the latter, setting the stage for Alka's illustrious career.

Career

Alka Yagnik's career began in earnest when she started singing at the age of four, and she quickly became one of the most prominent playback singers in Hindi cinema, especially during the 1990s. Known for her versatility, she has sung a wide range of songs, including romantic ballads, peppy numbers, and soulful melodies. Alka frequently collaborated with notable male playback singers like Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, and Sonu Nigam. Her contributions to music have earned her numerous accolades, including two National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. In 1989, Alka married businessman Neeraj Kapoor, and they have a daughter named Syesha. Despite her successful career, Alka faced personal challenges, including a diagnosis of sensorineural hearing loss in 2024. Her legacy as a versatile artist is well recognized; she was named the most-streamed Indian artist-mom on Spotify in 2019.
