Early Life

Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad (now Prayagraj), India, to a family deeply rooted in the arts and activism. His father, Harivansh Rai Bachchan, was a renowned Hindi poet, while his mother, Teji Bachchan, was a social activist. Initially named Inquilaab, he was later given the name Amitabh, suggested by poet Sumitranandan Pant. The Bachchan family adopted this surname, which means "child-like" in colloquial Hindi, as a pen name for Harivansh, and it has since become synonymous with Amitabh's illustrious career.

Career

Bachchan's journey in the film industry began in 1969 with a voice narration in the National Award-winning film "Bhuvan Shome." His first acting role came in "Saat Hindustani," but it was his performance in "Anand" (1971) that earned him his first Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. Over the years, he became a dominant figure in Bollywood, earning titles like "Shahenshah of Bollywood" and "Star of the Millennium." His career is marked by over 200 films and numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Bhushan and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Personal Life

Amitabh Bachchan married actress Jaya Bhaduri on June 3, 1973, and they have two children, Shweta and Abhishek. Abhishek is also an actor, married to former Miss World Aishwarya Rai. Despite his immense fame, Bachchan has maintained a relatively private family life, residing in Mumbai. He is known for his philanthropic efforts and has been a teetotaler and non-smoker since 2006.
