André Previn

Early Life

André George Previn was born on April 6, 1929, in Berlin, Germany, into a Jewish family. He was the youngest of three children, and his father, Jack Previn, was a lawyer and music teacher. Displaying musical talent from a young age, Previn began piano lessons at six and enrolled at the Berlin Conservatory. However, in 1938, due to the rise of anti-Semitism, he was expelled despite holding a scholarship. The Previn family fled to Paris and then to New York City, where they arrived in November 1938. Previn became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1943 and graduated from Beverly Hills High School in 1946.

Career

Previn's career spanned multiple facets of music, including Hollywood films, jazz, and classical music. He gained fame as a conductor and composer, winning four Academy Awards for his film scores, including for "Gigi" and "My Fair Lady." In jazz, he was celebrated as a pianist and interpreter of the Great American Songbook. His classical music career included performances as a pianist and conductor, and he became a prominent figure on television. Previn was married five times, with notable relationships including jazz singer Betty Bennett and actress Mia Farrow, with whom he had three children. His personal life was often intertwined with his professional endeavors, as he collaborated with his wives on various musical projects. Previn's legacy is marked by his contributions to music, earning him numerous accolades, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Kennedy Center Honors.
