Early Life

Andrés Segovia Torres, born on February 21, 1893, in Linares, Jaén, Spain, was a virtuoso classical guitarist who would go on to revolutionize the perception of the guitar as a concert instrument. At a young age, he was sent to live with his uncle Eduardo, who recognized his musical talent and arranged for his first music lessons. However, these early lessons were unhappy due to the strict methods of his teacher, leading Eduardo to seek a better educational environment in Granada. It was here that Segovia resumed his studies, influenced by classical composers like Fernando Sor and Francisco Tárrega, although he later distanced himself from flamenco, stating he did not have a taste for it.

Career

Segovia's first public performance occurred at the age of 16 in Granada, and he quickly gained recognition, performing in Madrid, Paris, and Barcelona. His international career took off with a successful tour of South America in 1919, coinciding with a revival of the guitar's popularity as a concert instrument. He was instrumental in this resurgence, thanks to his unique artistry and the advancements in recording technology. Throughout his career, Segovia commissioned new works and transcribed classical pieces for the guitar, significantly enriching the modern-romantic repertoire. He collaborated with notable composers, including Alexandre Tansman, who wrote several pieces for him.

Personal Life and Legacy

Segovia's personal life included two marriages, first to Adelaida Portillo in 1918 and later to pianist Paquita Madriguera in 1935. He also had a long-term relationship with Brazilian singer Olga Praguer Coelho. In 1962, he married Emilia Magdalena Corral Sancho, with whom he had a son, Carlos Andrés Segovia. His contributions to music earned him numerous accolades, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the title of Marqués de Salobreña from King Juan Carlos I in 1981. Segovia's legacy endures through his recordings and the many guitarists who were influenced by his teachings and performances, solidifying his place as a pivotal figure in classical music history.
