Early Life

Howard Andrew Williams, known as Andy Williams, was born on December 3, 1927, in Wall Lake, Iowa. He was the youngest of four brothers and grew up in a musical family, which laid the foundation for his future career. By 1935, the family had moved to Des Moines, Iowa, and later to California, where Williams completed his high school education at University High School in Los Angeles. At the age of 17, he joined the United States Merchant Marine and served until the end of World War II.

Career

Williams began his musical journey in 1938 when he and his brothers formed the Williams Brothers quartet, performing on various radio stations across the Midwest. They gained significant recognition after singing with Bing Crosby on the hit record "Swinging on a Star" in 1944. Over the years, Williams transitioned into a solo career, releasing 43 albums, with 15 achieving gold certification and three platinum. He hosted "The Andy Williams Show" from 1962 to 1971, which won three Emmy Awards and showcased his charm and vocal talent. Williams sold over 45 million records worldwide, solidifying his status as a pop and jazz icon.

Personal Life

In 1961, Williams married Claudine Longet, a French dancer, with whom he had three children. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1975, but they remained friends. Williams was also known for his involvement in sports, having partial ownership of the Phoenix Suns NBA team and hosting a PGA Tour golf tournament in San Diego for two decades. In 1991, he married Debbie Haas, and they lived in Branson, Missouri, where he became known as the "honorary mayor." Williams was a passionate collector of modern art and an avid golfer until his passing on September 25, 2012.
