Early Life

Angela Gheorghiu, born Angela Burlacu on September 7, 1965, in Adjud, Romania, is a celebrated Romanian soprano known for her remarkable contributions to opera. Growing up in a family with a seamstress mother and a train driver father, she was introduced to music early on, singing opera alongside her sister Elena. At the age of 14, Gheorghiu began formal vocal training at the Music High School in Bucharest, later continuing her studies at the National University of Music Bucharest under the guidance of Mia Barbu. She graduated in 1990, shortly after the fall of Nicolae Ceaușescu, which allowed her to pursue an international career. Her graduation performance as Mimì in "La bohème" marked the beginning of her ascent in the opera world.

Career

Gheorghiu made her international debut in 1991 at the Theater Basel, performing as Adina in "L'elisir d'amore." Her career quickly flourished, with significant performances at prestigious venues such as the Royal Opera House in London and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Notably, her portrayal of Violetta in "La traviata" in 1994 catapulted her to stardom, leading to a live broadcast by BBC Two. Throughout her career, she has been recognized for her interpretations of Puccini and Verdi operas, earning accolades such as the Echo Klassik – Female Singer of the Year and the Commander of the Order of the Star of Romania.

Personal Life

Angela Gheorghiu's personal life has been marked by both triumph and tragedy. In 1996, she married tenor Roberto Alagna, whom she met while performing in "La bohème." Their relationship has been tumultuous, with separations and reconciliations, but they have continued to collaborate musically. Following the death of her sister Elena in a car accident in 1996, Gheorghiu adopted her sister's daughter, Ioana, who has since pursued her education in London. Gheorghiu's outspoken nature regarding artistic integrity in opera has also shaped her career, as she often challenges directors who prioritize their visions over the music and characters.
