Anneke Grönloh

Early Life

Johanna Louise "Anneke" Grönloh was born on June 7, 1942, in Tondano, North Sulawesi, Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia). Her early years were marked by hardship as she spent time in a Japanese concentration camp in Fukuoka during World War II, following her father's internment as an officer of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. After the war, her family relocated to the Netherlands, where she grew up in Eindhoven.

Career

Grönloh's musical journey began in secondary school, where she met Peter Koelewijn and started performing at local parties. Her career took off in 1959 after winning a talent show, leading to a series of hits throughout the 1960s, including the iconic "Brandend zand" (Burning sand), one of the best-selling Dutch songs of all time. In 1964, she represented the Netherlands in the Eurovision Song Contest with "Jij bent mijn leven" (You are my life), finishing in tenth place. Grönloh's repertoire included not only pop music but also kroncong and jazz, her favorite genre. In 2000, she was honored as the "Singer of the Century" in the Netherlands due to her remarkable sales achievements.

In addition to her music, Grönloh participated in the reality show Big Brother VIPS in 2000 and released a DVD titled "Anneke and Friends" in 2006. She continued to perform until health issues led to her retirement, with her final show taking place on August 26, 2017. Grönloh passed away on September 14, 2018, in Arleuf, France, at the age of 76.
