Early Life

Yma Sumac, born Zoila Emperatriz Chávarri Castillo on September 13, 1922, in Callao, Peru, grew up in a middle-class family that later moved to Cajamarca. The youngest of six children, she was influenced by the Andean mountains, which helped her develop an extraordinary vocal range as she imitated local birds and animals. After moving to Lima in 1934, she received private tutoring and attended a Catholic school, laying the groundwork for her future musical career.

Career

Sumac's musical journey began in earnest in 1938 when she made her first public appearance with Moises Vivanco at a religious festival. By 1943, she had recorded numerous Peruvian folk songs in Buenos Aires. Her big break came in 1950 when she was discovered by Les Baxter and signed to Capitol Records, adopting the stage name Yma Sumac. Her debut album, "Voice of the Xtabay," became a massive success, reaching number one on the Billboard 200 and selling over a million copies in the U.S. Throughout the 1950s, she toured extensively, performing at prestigious venues like the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall, and released several acclaimed albums, including "Legend of the Sun Virgin" and "Mambo!".

Personal Life

Yma Sumac married Moisés Vivanco on June 6, 1942, and together they toured South America and Mexico. They had one son, Carlos, born in 1949. Despite facing criticism from some in Peru for her unique style, Sumac's talent and exotic persona captivated audiences worldwide. In her later years, she continued to perform and record, even experimenting with rock music and electronic dance genres, showcasing her versatility as an artist until her passing in 2008.
